How to Earn your Merit Badges

Merit badges are a thing of pride for every scout. The National Council for scouts suggests that every scout is eligible to earn more than a 100 badges, even if they do not have any rank advancement. Boy scouts and girl scouts can pick any subject of interest and also choose one counselor who will guide them on the topic. Say for example, they choose art; they can select a counselor who excels in a particular art form. In this way, they can collect information on that area and present his/her work in a unique format.

The entire process starts with a merit badge application form, followed by regular sessions with a counselor, work sessions with pictures and stories and finally presenting the completed project to the counselor. When the counselor is satisfied with the work (and it’s in line with the stated requirements) he/she notifies the respected scout master so that the merit badge is handed over to the child. Working with an organization tool can also help in prioritizing a child’s tasks. The process of working towards a merit badge and successfully procuring one can be an eye-opener to every child involved. Overall it helps them to realize the value of organized living at an early stage.
